Hi, I'm Kenneth Brown. I am a Multi-media student, and I have an Associates Degree in Theater from Utah Valley State College now know as Utah Valley University.
I have acted in many U.V.S.C. theater productions, such as Baptists in “ Taming of the Shrew ” ‚ Lord Capulet in “ Romeo and Juliet ” ‚ Ol ’ King Cole in ” The Trial of the Big Bad Wolf”‚ Zophar in “ JB ” ‚ Harold Lowe in “ Farewell to Eden ” ‚ and Mr. Brill in “ Copacabana ”.
I have also Directed three times in U.V.S.C.’s Short Attention Span Theater.
One day I was approached by a friend, Pete Walters, with the idea of "Bowling for Midway" because he said that I looks so much like Michael Moore. It is a Mock-u-mentary based on "Bowling for Columbine"
After finishing the film, myself and a few friends got a few laughs from the film, but we didn't really push any type of distribution or for film festival entries.
Then a year later, during the heat of the Presidential Campaign, The U.V.S.C. student body President announced plans to bring Michael Moore to U.V.S.C.
Utah is the most conservative state in our country. To invite one of the most liberal documentary film makers to Utah, is like throwing gas on a fire. Being a student at U.V.S.C., that has a striking resemblance to Michael Moore, caused quite a bit of attention to be put on me. My first thought was, "Life isn't fair when you are born a Republican, and you look like a Democrat that lives in Utah."
With the huge controversy that ensued after the announcement, U.V.S.C. was deluged by the local and national press. In the melee that soon followed, there was a heated debate going on in the hallway. So for fun, I decided to do my Michael Moore impersonation and said, "We should invite Michael Moore here, He's a very handsome man." The stunned silence from the crowd was deafening. I'm glad no one had a rope, I thought I was going to be lynched.
In that crowd, I met a BYU student named Steve Greenstreet. He told me he was making a documentary about Michael Moore's visit and was wondering if I wanted to be in it. I thought "why not". This will help out a fellow media student, and maybe I would get some help from him in the future on some of my media projects.
I didn't realize how driven he was until the final project was done.
The film he made was "This Divided State." It turned out to be an award winning documentary.
The attention that I received was at times fun, and other times disturbing. while Steve was touring the film around the country, he kept telling me that audiences loved me. One review I read said that I was the most memorable person in the film. But most of the reviews I read thought that I was a distraction. However, if I was able to make people laugh during a film with such a serious message, then I am proud to be a distraction.
